Piercing FAQ

Is there such a thing as the history of piercings?

Yes, it really does exist! As far back as 7000 BC, evidence was found in North Africa that ear jewelry was worn. There is documentation of pierced jewelry on humans from later times in all cultures - from the Egyptians to the Mayans to the Vikings.

Similar to early tattoos, a piercing was often used to mark a phase of life. For example, to mark the transition from childhood to adulthood or when a boy became a hunter.
So you could say that piercings have been omnipresent all over the world since time immemorial.

It is therefore astonishing that the first industrially manufactured piercing jewelry was not produced until 1975.

It can be said that piercing has reached its peak in modern times. According to statistics, around 10 percent of all people are pierced in some way. That is still around 800 million people.
