Piercing FAQ
Can taste buds be lost when piercing the tongue?
No, taste buds cannot be damaged by a tongue piercing.
There are so-called papillae on the surface of the tongue (which is a muscle, by the way). These papillae are responsible for the sense of taste.
Our tongue is divided into four taste regions, each with different types of flavor:
Sweet, salty, sour and bitter and is located at the edge, around the tongue.
The normal tongue piercing is pierced in the middle of the tongue. There are few to no taste buds in the middle of our tongue.
Our tongue has around 7000 - 9000 taste buds. These taste buds have a lifespan of approx. 5 - 20 hours - in other words, all dead buds are constantly replaced by new taste buds.
